Indian Standards for High Pressure Gas Cylinders

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has established specific standards that must be followed by manufacturers of High Pressure Gas Cylinders in India. BIS regularly updates these standards to align with international regulations and to accommodate evolving industrial requirements and applications of gas cylinders.

Indian Standards for High Pressure Gas Cylinders

IS 7285 – Part I

This Indian Standard for industrial gas cylinders applies to normalized cylinders.

IS 7285 – Part II

This Indian Standard applies to quenched and tempered cylinders used for industrial gases.

The design and dimensional calculations of cylinders manufactured under both standards remain largely the same. The main difference lies in the properties of the raw materials used during manufacturing.

IS 15490

Considering the rapid growth of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) industry, BIS and CCOE developed this standard specifically for CNG cylinders to ensure safety, reliability, and performance.

ISO 11439

This standard, established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), provides guidelines for manufacturing CNG cylinders used in vehicles.

Global Adoption

Many countries adopt this standard fully or partially based on their national requirements. Countries such as Malaysia, Iran, Thailand, and Egypt have adopted it as a common framework for industry regulation and safety.

 

ISO 4705D & ISO 9809

These standards apply to industrial gas cylinders and serve as global references for cylinder manufacturing and safety systems.

They have a strong safety record and are widely adopted by countries either completely or with minor modifications to meet local regulations.
